Open to adults. Registration required.Join us this Poetry Month for a reading from local poets Joel Dias-Porter and Peter Murphy. Peter E. Murphy's most recent book, Once Upon a Time You Lived in a Castle, a memoir about growing up in Wales and New York City, is forthcoming from Toplight Books. He is the founder of Murphy Writing of Stockton University in Atlantic City where he runs workshops for writers and teachers in the US and abroad.
Joel Dias-Porter, a resident of Atlantic City, is self-unemployed but is rumored to gamble for a living. In his recent book, Ideas of Improvisation, Joel Dias Porter interrogates how the I & the I of the imaginary can appear perpendicular to the axis of the real. In addition to the expected body of words, Joel Dias-Porter improvises on the idea of the lyric by marooning text to create ghost poems that float above the page and add a new haiku-like dimension. Like the rook in brook, in Ideas of Improvisation we hear how Dias-Porter, a neurodiverse technician of the text, reformulates form to navigate the spectrum of possibility.

Open to adults. Registration required. Guest lecturer, Mary Maudsley, will speak on Women in genocide with emphasis on women during the Holocaust. This is a program presented in honor of Women's History Month.Lecture Description: For many years women did not emerge as a topic of interest in considering the Holocaust. This is surprising because, although all Jews and members of certain other groups were targeted for persecution and later for for death, women often experienced that same persecution differently from men. Maudsley suggests that there are no "lessons" to be learned from women in the Holocaust. We can only observe and describe how the impact of catastrophe affects women differently from men. Mary Maudsley is a retired trial lawyer; her 40+ years of practice overlapped with 20+ years of teaching in the Holocaust and Genocide program at Stockton University. Since her retirement from Stockton, Maudsley has been substitute teaching in Pleasantville, and tutoring middle school students and law school hopefuls. She has also been an instructor in the Stockton FELS lecture series. In addition to several book reviews, she has published an article: Justice and the Courtroom: Jewish Collaboration in Hungary The Case of Rabbi Bela Berend, The Rosenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, 2017.Maudsley has been reading about the Holocaust since 1959, before the word Holocaust was used to describe the genocide of the Jews during WWII. When Stockton offered a Master's degree in Holocaust and Genocide, she enrolled in the very first class.
