Author: FitzGerald, Frances, 1940- author. Published: 2018 2017 Call Number: 277.3 FITZGERALD Format: Books Summary: The evangelical movement began in the revivals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, known in America as the Great Awakenings. A populist rebellion against the established churches, it became the dominant religious force in the country. During the nineteenth century, white evangelicals split apart dramatically, first North versus South, and then at the end of the century, modernist versus fundamentalist. After World War II, Billy Graham, the revivalist preacher, attracted enormous crowds and tried to gather all Protestants under his big tent, but the civil rights movement and the social revolution of the sixties drove them apart again. By the 1980s, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and other southern televangelists had formed the Christian right. Protesting abortion and gay rights, they led the South into the Republican Party, and for thirty-five years they were the sole voice of evangelicals to be heard nationally. Eventually a younger generation of leaders protested the Christian right's close ties with the Republican Party and proposed a broader agenda of issues, such as climate change, gender equality, and immigration reform. Evangelicals have in many ways defined the nation. They have shaped our culture and our politics. Evangelicals now constitute twenty-five percent of the American population, but they are no longer monolithic in their politics. They range from Tea Party supporters to social reformers. Still, with the decline of religious faith generally, FitzGerald suggests that evangelical churches must embrace ethnic minorities if they are to survive.
Author: Siegel, Daniel J., 1957- author. Siegel, MD, presents a life-changing method for cultivating more focus, presence, and peace in your life: the Wheel of Awareness. A meditation practice that draws on his decades exploring the intersection between neuroscience and the nature of consciousness as well as his experience teaching the practice to thousands of students around the world, the Wheel will enable you to harness the power of awareness in your day-to-day life. An in-depth look at the science that underlies meditation's effectiveness, this book reveals how the Wheel and other mindfulness practices hone our ability to focus, open our awareness, and help us to practice kind intention toward ourselves and those around us. According to Siegel, one secret behind meditation's effectiveness lies in the very structure of our brains, as evidenced by the powerful principle 'Where attention goes, neural firing flows, and neural connection grows.' Research reveals how the more we develop our practice, the more healthy and nimble our brains become in navigating the challenges that life brings our way. Whether you have no experience with a reflective practice or you are an experienced practitioner, Aware is a hands-on guide that will enable you to be more present in each moment as well as more energized and emotionally resilient in your life."--Dust jacket.

Author: Johnson, Steven, 1968- author. Published: 2018 Call Number: 153.8 JOHNSON Format: Books Summary: Author Steven Johnson uncovers powerful tools for honing the important skill of complex decision-making. Through compelling stories that reveal surprising insights, Johnson explains how we can most effectively approach the choices that can chart the course of a life, an organization, or a civilization. Farsighted will help you imagine your possible futures and appreciate the subtle intelligence of the choices that shaped our broader social history. -- Adapted from book jacket. "The hardest choices are also the most consequential. So why do we know so little about how to get them right? Big, life-altering decisions matter so much more than the decisions we make every day, and they're also the most difficult: where to live, whom to marry, what to believe, whether to start a company, how to end a war. There's no one-size-fits-all approach for addressing these kinds of conundrums. Steven Johnson's classic Where Good Ideas Come From inspired creative people all over the world with new ways of thinking about innovation. In Farsighted, he uncovers powerful tools for honing the important skill of complex decision-making. While you can't model a once-in-a-lifetime choice, you can model the deliberative tactics of expert decision-makers. These experts aren't just the master strategists running major companies or negotiating high-level diplomacy. They're the novelists who draw out the complexity of their characters' inner lives, the city officials who secure long-term water supplies, and the scientists who reckon with future challenges most of us haven't even imagined. The smartest decision-makers don't go with their guts. Their success relies on having a future-oriented approach and the ability to consider all their options in a creative, productive way. Through compelling stories that reveal surprising insights, Johnson explains how we can most effectively approach the choices that can chart the course of a life, an organization, or a civilization. Farsighted will help you imagine your possible futures and appreciate the subtle intelligence of the choices that shaped our broader social history."--Dust jacket.
Author: Gilmour, David, 1952- author. Published: 2018 Call Number: 954.035 Format: Books Summary: Who of the British went to India, and why? We know about Kipling and Forster, Orwell and Scott, but what of the youthful forestry official, the enterprising boxwallah, the fervid missionary? What motivated them to travel halfway around the globe, what lives did they lead when they got there, and what did they think about it all? Full of spirited, illuminating anecdotes drawn from long-forgotten memoirs, correspondence, and government documents, The British in India weaves a rich tapestry of the everyday experiences of the Britons who found themselves in "the jewel in the crown" of the British Empire. David Gilmour captures the substance and texture of their work, home, and social lives, and illustrates how these transformed across the several centuries of British presence and rule in the subcontinent, from the East India Company's first trading station in 1615 to the twilight of the Raj and Partition and Independence in 1947. He takes us through remote hill stations, bustling coastal ports, opulent palaces, regimented cantonments, and dense jungles, revealing the country as seen through British eyes, and wittily reveling in all the particular concerns and contradictions that were a consequence of that limited perspective. The British in India is a breathtaking accomplishment, a vivid and balanced history written with brio, elegance, and erudition.
Author: Greenblatt, Stephen, 1943- author. Published: 2017 Call Number: 233.14 GREENBLATT Format: Books Summary: Stephen Greenblatt explores the enduring story of humanity's first parents. Tracking the tale into the deep past, Greenblatt uncovers the tremendous theological, artistic, and cultural investment over centuries that made these fictional figures so profoundly resonant in the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim worlds and, finally, so very 'real' to millions of people even in the present. "Bolder, even, than the ambitious books for which Stephen Greenblatt is already renowned, The Rise and Fall of Adam and Eve explores the enduring story of humanity's first parents, and through them, of Western civilization. Tracking the tale into the deep past, to the Hebrews' exile in Babylon, Greenblatt explores the tremendous theological, artistic, and cultural creativity over the centuries that made Adam and Eve so profoundly resonant, and continues to make them, finally, so very "real" to millions of people even in the present. Both a hymn to human responsibility and a dark fable about human wretchedness, their story--told in only a few verses in an ancient book--has served as a mirror in which we seem to glimpse the whole, long history of human fears and desires. With the uncanny brilliance he previously brought to his depictions of William Shakespeare and Poggio Bracciolini (the humanist monk who is the protagonist of The Swerve), Greenblatt explores the intensely personal engagement of Augustine, Dürer, and Milton in this mammoth project of collective creation, While he also limns the diversity of the story's offspring: rich allegory, vicious misogyny, deep moral insight, and some of the greatest triumphs of art and literature. The biblical origin story, Greenblatt argues, is a model for what the humanities still have to offer: not the scientific nature of things, but rather a deep encounter with problems that have gripped our species for as long as we can recall and that continue to fascinate and trouble us today."--Jacket.
