Sarah Penner returns with a new novel, THE AMALFI CURSE, which gives us a glimpse into a mythical history not widely known. The novel caught my eye for its beautiful cover art and the title indicating that its subject matter was the Amalfi Coast, a region in which my family is rooted. I grew up hearing the magical stories of Hercules falling in love with the nymph Amalfi, the sirens of Li Galli, the Janare of Conca Dei Marini, and many others.
We meet Haven Ambrose, a nautical archaeologist who has traveled to Positano, a magnificent village drenched in sun, folklore, and a mysterious shipwreck just begging to be investigated. But the shipwreck is not the only reason Haven finds herself there. She is also searching for a secret stash of priceless gems last seen by her late father on his last dive. Soon after arriving, Haven finds herself working with her father’s rival, Conrad. Conrad is as much of a chauvinist as he is a top experienced archaeologist. Even though Conrad once saved Haven’s life, she can’t help but feel suspicious that he is attempting to take over her project or find the hidden stones for himself.
The backstory of the modern narrative takes us back to 1821, where we are introduced to a sea witch named Mari. She is attempting to flee Positano with her lover, Holmes. But there are dangerous and corrupt men on the island who are hunting down witches to exploit their powers, sometimes resorting to kidnapping.
I found this novel a captivating, a page-turning piece of fantastic, mythical historical fiction. Penner used her intensive research into Amalfi’s history and culture to honor the few stories those of us from that region all know, love, and believe and to create a thoroughly entertaining reading experience.
