Tip Sheet Guide: Skills Assessment
Looking for a new line of work? There are many resources for evaluating your skills and experience.

Books for skills assessment can be found at 153.94. Career information is in reference and the general collection at 331. Many libraries have special sections for job and career information as well as online web resources.

Start with the classic book What Color is Your Parachute: A Practical Manual for Job-hunters and Career-changers by R. N. Bolles.

  • careervoyages.gov from the federal government calls itself the ultimate road trip to career success. It covers many topics and focuses on exploring career options and high growth jobs with hundreds of videos about jobs and careers. There’s also a Spanish version.

  • imapmycareer.com offers free and paid services. Use this site to map a career that’s right for you – one that fits your strengths, interests and motivational needs.

  • careerplanning.about.com gives lots of direction for choosing or changing a career and job hunting with links to more resources. It includes career tests and self assessments.

  • careerpath.com is a comprehensive site that has articles, tests, videos, and other valuable resources. Be careful to distinguish between free and cost services.

  • careerbuilder.com has a section on developing careers with many links. High quality videos are found under Advice & Resources. There’s also a Spanish version.
