Tip Sheet Guide: Job Searching

This may be the perfect time to explore career possibilities.

You may want to send and receive photos or documents using email. It may seem like an involved process, but it is easy to master. Be aware that opening and sending photos may take more time than you expect.
  • Make a list of all your personal strengths and assets.
Identify the skills that are transferable to a different job or industry. The Occupational Outlook Handbook lists related occupations. It is found online at bls.gov/OCO

Be persistent and positive.

Mousing Around
  • Create a current resume and cover letter you can edit for different jobs.

Include your email or cell phone number so you can respond promptly.

  • Explore contract or consulting opportunities.

Employers often like to hire someone whose work is familiar.

  • Join or form a job club.

Members provide moral support and assistance with resumes and networking.

  • Schedule time daily to search, network, and explore:
    1. Employment links. Start at the library’s homepage atlanticlibrary.org. Click on Explore and then Employment.
    2. Use different keywords when searching for job titles. For example: teacher, instructor, or educator.
    3. Network with former co-workers, customers, your community groups, friends, and family.
    4. Use social media tools, such as www. twitter.com, for networking online.
    5. Attend job fairs.
    6. Visit your local branch of the Atlantic County Library System and browse the 650.14 section for books on resumes and interviewing.
    7. Visit the Reference Job Center located on the second floor of the Mays Landing branch.

Remember: Be prepared for the job interview. Do you have a job interview outfit ready for a last minute interview? Send a thank you note right after the interview.

Accept or decline a job offer? Be sure to evaluate the job offer before accepting or declining.
